Mexico elects first female president with landslide win

Mexico City: Claudia Sheinbaum, the presidential candidate for Mexico, who is expected to win on Sunday, has stated that both of her rivals had phoned her and acknowledged her victory. “I will become the first female president of Mexico for the first time in the republic’s 200-year history,” Sheinbaum said as election officials revealed a statistical sample that showed her holding an unassailable lead.

Based on a statistical sample, the 61-year-old climate scientist and former legislator received between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote. Xóchitl Gálvez, the opposition candidate, received between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote, while Jorge Álvarez Máynez received between 9.9% and 10.8%.The candidate for the governing party ran on a platform of carrying on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s political trajectory, which has been established over the previous six years.

Mexico, which is home to the second-largest Roman Catholic population in the world and is well-known for its macho culture, is taking a significant stride forward with Sheinbaum’s impending triumph. For years, Mexico has promoted more traditional values and roles for women. Sheinbaum is now the first female general election winner in the United States, Mexico, or Canada.

Shortly after the election authorities declared the results, López Obrador said, “Of course, I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum with all my respect who ended up the winner by a wide margin.” “She will be the first female president of Mexico in two centuries.” Currently, his Morena party has a simple majority of seats in both houses of Congress as well as 23 of the 32 governorships.
